Papoose’s Childhood
Papoose grew up in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, where he was of Liberian descent. He attended Immaculata High School, where he graduated. His cousin Pi’erre Bourne, who went on to become a platinum producer, was one of his influences.

Papoose rose to prominence among hip hop fans after contributing to the album Roots of Evil. He continued to hone his skills over the years, eventually releasing his debut single, Thug Connection, in 2004. This resulted in him receiving multiple offers, including one from Select Records, who offered him an eight-album deal that never materialized.
He began to produce his own music and even began to distribute it himself. He became increasingly adept at releasing mixtapes, and between the years 2004 and 2006, he was able to release more than 12 mixtapes. In 2005, he won the Justo Mixtape Award for Best Underground Artist as a result of this.

His hard work began to pay off in 2006, when he signed a lucrative $1.5 million deal with Jive Records. As a result, he began work on his debut album, The Nacirema Dream. However, the relationship that Papoose had with Jive deteriorated massively over time and as a result, Papoose again started to work independently.
Between 2007 and 2012, he released a total of nine mixtapes. Papoose then started to work together with Fontana Distribution to release his long-awaited album The Nacirema Dream which fans got to hear on 2013 and managed to debut at the number 97 spot in the U.S. Billboard 200.
Papoose then went on to work with Hot 97 but also developed some rivals including Kendrick Lamar for whom he created a diss track since Lamar was claiming to be the King of New York. He went on to release other mixtapes, such as Hoodie Season 2 and Cigar Society. Papoose would then release his second album that was titled You Can’t Stop Destiny.
Papoose has also been involved in the show called Love & Hip Hop: New York that airs on VH1 since they received an offer that was too good to be refused. As a result, he and his wife were cast in the show for several seasons. Furthermore, there was even a spin-off show called Remy & Papoose: Meet the Mackies.

Papoose was in a relationship with Yvetta Lashley with whom he would also have two children. However, they later went their separate ways. Papoose later fell in love with rapper Remy Ma and the two would exchange their wedding vows via a phone call when she was in hail back in 2008.
Eventually, the two decided to have their wedding in 2016 which was also showcased in an episode of Love & Hip Hop: New York’s sixth season. Together with Remy, the couple has a child together named Reminisce Mackenzie who was born in 2018.
